All Quiet on the Western Front

What do you “see” as the soldiers march to the front? Why do they joke about the rows of coffins?

They aren't really joking; they're being sarcastic. Each of the soldiers realizes that the neatly stacked coffins are meant for their own casualties; the fact that anyone could claim one as their own is an ominous thought covered by joking sarcasm.
