The visit with his mother restored something Paul had lost.... his ability to connect..... to some extent his humanity. When he returned to the front, he saw the prisoners as men.... men with mothers, families, men living in the same horrific conditions he lives in. He comes to see war for what it is.... politics. He realizes that one day the war will be over, and he also realizes that his thoughts must be put aside until it is.
