How does Paul insure that he and Albert can stay together?

The surgeon removes a piece of shell and says Paul can leave tomorrow. Paul later bribes the army medical sergeant-major to keep him and Kropp together. Paul learns that Kropp's fever will force him to get off at the next station. Paul fakes a fever, by heating his thermometer, and gets sent off with Kropp.
