Paul has just killed Gerard. Paul ends up feeling profound guilt and closeness with him. He calls him "comrade", Paul sees him as a brother. Paul thinks they share a common bond, a bond greater than he shares with people at home. The dead man could well have been him. Paul thinks they are brothers just merely trying to survive.
