How does Paul explain his close relationship with Kat?

They cook the goose in a lean-to while the sound of distant fighting intrudes. Paul reflects how cooking the goose makes him and Kat more intimate. Paul watches Kat dreamily and sees in the stars a little soldier marching on in big boots. There is a sense of brotherhood and love that Paul shares with Kat.
