Paul's father wants Paul to wear his uniform in public  to show him off. Others see Paul as a hero figure and ask him to regail them with stories of heroic acts and how well Germany is doing in the war. Paul finds that others he meets have unrealistic expectations and ideas about war. He feels he does not belong in this "foreign world" which is civilian life.
