All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front Assessment Question

Why do you think the author timed Paul’s death in October 1918, just before the long-rumored armistice? (Germany signed The Treaty of Versailles on November 11, 1918.)

I think the author meant to end the book with a heavy sense of irony. In a sense it is tragic irony as the reader witnesses Paul's friends die one by one: including Kat. Paul and his friends were unwillingly made into a creature of war. They dreamed of peacetime but the dream disappears when peace is within their grasp.
