The rats are eating all their bits of bread. Their trenches are infested with them. The men are half starving and they need their bread. They decide to put bread in a pile and lay in wait in the darkness. When they hear the little feet they turn on their pocket torches and strike the rats with spades. It works for awhile but the rats soon get wise to it.
