All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front

In the opening scene, why does Paul's company have extra food to eat? Why is Franz Kemmerich dying? How are Muller's feelings about Kemmerich's dying different from Pauls's feelings?

The cook, Ginger, has prepared enough food for 150 men. The soldiers dislike Ginger because he does not bring the food close to the front lines during fighting, and it is always cold. They want the leftovers and get into an argument. Their lieutenant comes over and orders Ginger to serve all the food.

Kemmerich lost his leg because of a wound in battle, it was amputated.

Paul genuinely feels the loss of a friend, whereas Muller wants to take possession of the man's boots.
