Although numerous circumstances point to the fact that Larry could never have survived, his mother never gives up hope. She has no tangible proof that her son has been killed. There's no body, and she's had no closure. In addition, Kate's husband may inadvertently had a hand in his son's death. For Kate to admit he's gone might possibly mean she has to hold her husband responsible.
