In act one we are made aware that the broken apple tree represents Kate Keller’s delusion that Larry is still alive. This tree and the apples clinging to it represents Kate's dilution. Frank has been preparing a horoscope for Larry at the request of Keller's wife Kate. She wishes to know if November 25th, the day on which Larry went missing in the war, was a favourable day for her son. Kate also has trouble with Larry's wife dating her other son. This reminds her that Larry isn't coming home.
