One way in which formal and informal speech was evident in the text, was the way in which Miller introduced the play formally. The opening scene, or introduction, is boring, monotonous, and completely intentional on Miller's part.

Though this is often argued by critics, once we leave the opening behind, Miller's characters come into their own. He used formal speech to reflect history and informal to dramatize.
