Gerda's story shows the reader just how important it is to live through each day with the hope that there will be a tomorrow, a tomorrow which will give the opportunity to share one's life lessons with others and hopefully a time to show people that living a moral life, even in the midst of the most horrid torture and oppression, will help one live well each day.

You might consider Gerda's faith in humanity supporting the theme of hope. Also the theme of morality is very important. Did the Nazi soldiers have free will to stop the atrocities? Is it enough for a soldier to say they had orders to carry out or they would be shot?
