Katie is a white woman who is buying beer at Jerry’s when she mistakenly trips over Rashad. Paul and the cashier accuse Rashad of stealing resulting in the violent arrest. Katie comes to the hospital to offer to testify that Rashad was innocent, and joins the protest at the end of the novel.
