The narrator describes events from her childhood with a youthful point of view, and over the course of her story we come to envision the period in her life when her carefree days ended, and she began to feel as if she must conform to various expectations. The narrator resists the traditional female role and is far more interested in the varied opportunities allotted to men. Over time, however, she accepted her role.... not to say that she did not feel entrapped and used by forces greater than herself.
