What do the deaths of key characters ( Porky, Edgar, Malachai etc.) illustrate about human nature ?

They illustrate the "darkness" in the sense that all these characters covet gold/money. They are in positions of leadership and fail to deliver their offices. They are scared and fall apart, thinking of themselves and wanting to continue as usual rather than helping others.
