Sojourner truth challenged traditional gender roles and stereotypes in her unfaltering advocacy for the rights of African American women. Truth declared that women were just as capable as men, that they deserved equal rights, and that they be given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. She also spoke about the intersectionality of gender and race, contending that African American women were doubly subjected to oppression because they were both women and black.
