In my opinion, the above quotes speaks to Mr. Murry's suffering, endurance, and inability to act. For all of the time his wife and children had been waiting for him, he had been trapped... unable to act, unable to do his job, and even more importantly, unable to return to or communicate with his family. From a distance, this pain is indistinguishable..... but when Charles Wallace (It) forces Meg to truly look him. In looking at his face, particularly his eyes, she can see the pain and defeat.... and in turn, it breaks her heart.
