The narrator uses different tenses, and thus, moves the plot along while drawing the reader into the story. We become well aware of the young man's thoughts, as he is described in the third person, and yet, when the narration changes back to the present tense we actually experience Sylvia's own emotions. The reader becomes engaed and involved..... thus, moving the plot along quickly.
