The letter was worn and rubbed. It looked like it was from a rough and rural place. It was from the narrator's Uncle Howard, telling him that his wife had received a small legacy from a recently deceased bachelor relative and she was coming to Boston to settle the estate. He asked the narrator to meet her at the station and to take care of her during her stay.
