What are Mariam's changing feelings as Rasheed becomes more upset with Laila?

Mariam begins to feel badly for Laila. Mariam in fact begins to identify with Laila and her abuse. Mariam and Laila become quite close joined in their shared misery under the abusive Rasheed.
