How did Rasheed lose his wife in "A thousand splendid sons"

Both Rasheeds's wives, Mariam and Laila, attempt to run away from the abusive Rasheed. They get stopped at the bus station. Eventually Mariam kills Rasheed when he is beating Laila to near death.
