What is the significance of Stella's and Blanche's first and last names, of Stella and Stanley living on Elysian Fields, of Blanche arriving on a streetcar named Desire, and of Stella and Blanche losing an estate called Belle Reve?

Stella means star.... and illustrates the shinging beauty of her character. She is radiant.

Blanche means white.... and represents the innocence and naivety of her youth..... up until the time of her marriage. According to Blanche, her first and last name together mean "white woods".

"..... the two together mean white woods. Like an orchard in spring! You can remember it by that" (60)

Blanche and Stanley live on the street, Elysian Fields. "Elysian" is defined as "happy" or "delightful". "Elysian Fields" refers to the home of the blessed in Greek mythology. Elysian Fields, is thus, seen as paradise. In context, Stella and Stanley's apartment is anything but paradise.
