Blanche depends on illusion to survive. She pretends her old Southern history is still alive. This is juxtaposed with Stanley's realism. Stanley and Stella live in near poverty in a dilapidated apartment in the poor French section of New Orleans. Stella must also resort to a kind of illusion, forcing herself to believe that Blanche's accusations against Stanley are false so that she can continue living with her husband.
