The pressure for Leper to enlist, and his inability to emotionally handle the war create the perfect environment for Leper to lose himself and suffer psychologically. The reality of war combined with Leper's sensitivity cause him to flee.... he runs away, and in turn, loses himself. The real Leper never returns from war, thus, he is another one of the war's casualties.
