The narrator had returned to visit the school of his youth. He specifically returned to see to see the stairs and the tree, the two places that were life changing, the places that had impacted him even into his adulthood. In his own words, "I began at that point the emotional examination to note how far my convalescence had gone—I was taller, bigger generally in relation to these stairs."
