Why does Gene think that clearing out his locker is a more significant end to his schooling than getting a diploma?

Gene's experience at Devon had little to do with his academics. Gene's real experience was life and growing up. Gene's locker represents all his experiences; they represent his pleasure and and his pain, the sacred and profane.
