Why does Finny say that he has to waste Gene's time "for him" in chapter 5?

Gene wants to be the head of the class so he can balance out Finny's athletic achievements. Finny is easy going and always trying to get Gene to relax and not be so uptight about controlling his time and studies. This is why Finny says he has to waste Gene's time because Gene never wastes a minute.
