Why does Devon no longer have maid service?

Lack of maid service is one of the few reasons the boys feel the war. The war is expensive and extra materials and services like a maid's service was considered too extravagant while men were dying overseas.

The war has come. Some luxuries are no longer available as the entire country buttons down for war.
