Why do you think Finny looked at Gene "for an instance with extreme interest" just before the fall?

Finny looked at him with interest because he knew Gene had jostled the tree limb. I believe Finny looked at him to see if he could discern whether or not it was on purpose. He was trying to read Gene's face.
