Why do u think the author had both Leper and Brinker cast doubt upon Gene's innocence??

Using Brinker and Leper makes Gene seem all the more guilty. Unfortunately, Finny may have expected Brinker's maliciousness, but Leper's testimony really hit home and made what he heard the truth.
