What is implied when the narrator speaks of "how far his covalescence had gone"?

It means the narrator, Gene,  is referring to himself as having been sick and gone through a period of recovery. We can guess this time period is somewhere between when he left school and the moment he is writing. I think "sick" refers to some emotional trauma he had suffered and is coming to terms with by returning to Devon.
