what effect emerges when Finny says Gene is his best friend?

They don't say much in relation to the best friend....... just before, we have Gene's thoughts and jealousies...... then we have Finny's announcement that Gene is his "best pal." This occurs on page 48.

If I had to give you the effect in one word, I'd have to say "discomfitted."
