Leper finds that war is nothing like he thought it would be..... there was no glory, there wasn't anything..... just insanity waiting for him at the end.

Leper, one who is more innocent than some of the other boys, has little patience and enlists first, surprising all the other boys. He cannot stand to wait; he knows that ultimately be called and so he just gets a jump on everyone else. However, facing the realities of the war cause him to desert, showing that no matter what one thinks, one cannot be ready for the atrocities and horrors of war.
