A Separate Peace

Is Gene really glad that Finny is his roommate and best friend?

Later in the chapter, Gene states that Finny could "shine" at many things besides "blitzball," such as getting along with everyone. Gene states that he is glad of that because Finny is his roommate and best friend. Is Gene really glad? Please explain.

This is a difficult one. Yes Gene is glad that Finny is his roomate and friend but the relationship is not a healthy one. Both boys seem to want to "inhabit" the other. There are underlying conflicts and tensions that span the social, emotional and sexual levels.
