Leper is discharged from the army through a Section 8, "for the nuts in the service, the psychos, and the Funny Farm candidates". Leper starts rambling about truth and lies and transparency. Eventually he insinuates that Gene and Finny are living a lie. He says that he knows what really happened at the tree. This foreshadows Gene's eventual decision to come clean with Finny.
