How would you account for the developing friendship between the two boys(Finny and Gene)?

Gene and Finny are very much alike. They're both disciplined, intelligent, and competitive. Finny, however, was more rebellious, something that might have attracted Gene, as much as it made him jealous. Their friendship was a given.... two young, carefree boys in summer session.
