A Separate Peace

Gene states that perhaps he was "stopped by that level of feeling, deeper than I thought, which contains the truth." What "truth" do you think Gene is feeling?

After Finny states that gene is his "best pal," Gene isn't able to return the compliment. He states that perhaps he was "stopped by that level of feeling, deeper than I thought, which contains the truth." What truth do you think gene is feeling? Please explain.

Yeah there are many interpretations for this. Gene resents Finny for all his "perfectness" yet he is also drawn to finny for the same reason, it is certainly a paradox. On top of that there are latent sexual aggression/attraction issues at play. All of this confuses Gene to how exactly he views Finny.
