Do you think Gene is a "good boy" or a savage"?

By the end of lunch, Gene is certain that Leper's mother is convinced that Gene is a "good boy underneath." Gene states that Leper was "closer to the truth" when he said Gene was "savage underneath." What is your opinion of Gene? Is he a "good boy" or a "savage"? Please explain.

No, I do not think Gene was a savage. I believe that Leper's mother could see the good in him, and that she knew it was just a matter of time before Gene grew up into the man he was meant to be.
