I think that Woolf had to contend with the fact that the writing "tradition" was primarily a male occupation. Women writers were considered outside the mainstream and not a part of the classic writing canon. Woolf knew it was an uphill battle for women, like herself, to be taken seriously by the established patriarchal order.
