A River Runs Through It was released in 1992. Directed by Robert Redford and written by Richard Friedenberg based of the story of the same title by Norman Maclean. It was produces by Patrick Markey, Amalia Mato and Robert Redford and distributed by Columbia Pictures. The film would go on to win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, shot by Philippe Rousselot. It was nominated for two more Oscars including Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published, and Best Music, Original Score. And Robert Redford was nominated for a Golden Globe.

The film went on to gross $43,000,000 domestically in the United States and starred Brad Pitt. The film was shot in Montana in Livingston and Bozeman as well on the Yellowstone, Gallatin and Boulder Rivers. The story of the two brothers is based upon Maclean's relationship with his own real-life brother, in which Norman takes liberties with the reality of their story and fictionalizes portions of it for effect in his writing.
