The insurance money holds the possibility of the American Dream for the family. Each member has a different way to use the money but the check means possibilities that did not exist before.

A very popular theme in this book is a dream deffered, which is also the name of the poem the book was written off of. Each of the character's in this play has their own dream that they haven't yet fullfilled, each of which requires an investment of money. The check symbolizes a dream come true to them. If Bennie got the check, she would go to school to become a doctor. Walter would use it to start a bussiness. Ruth would use the money for a house as well as Mama. This is why every member is so desperate for the check.
