Beneatha dreams of being a doctor. Walter, as the man of the family, expects his sister to put his needs first. Mama shares her daughter's dreams, but she also defers to Walter's status. Note, Mama also supports Beneatha, and she often corrects her son..... she does not, however, wish to emasculate her son.
