Sir Bounteous Progess
The patriarch of the family whose intentions to leave his estate to Follywit are not good enough for the young man, so Bounteous also becomes the unwitting victim of much theft and trickery.
Richard Follywit
A thankless, evil man with a strong intention to steal from his own inheritance. Also a player in his own troop of actors.
Mawworm and Hoboy
Follywit's rather foolish companions.
Mr. Hairbrain
An unknowing cuckold whose attempts to prevent his worst nightmare only make it happen faster—his wife having an affair.
Mrs. Hairbrain
The woman who does have an affair on her husband, with Penitent Brothel.
Penitent Brothel
One of the only people in the play whose plan works and who gets what he wants, only to find himself attacked by spiritual, demonic forces.
Courtesan
A young prostitute whose moral corruption makes her everyone's worst-kept secret. She has slept with most of the cast.
The Courtesan's mother
An evil, selfish person who, like Follywit, seeks to exploit her own family, but even worse—she exploits her young virgin daughter and turns her into a prostitute.
