In context, this quote speaks to Beah's fear to let down his defenses and accept the happiness and freedom he's been offered. He sees happiness as something fragile.... something that can be broken and lost in an instant. He's afraid something will happen to rip away his happiness, which is totally understandable after the horrors he has experienced.
