A Long Way Gone

How does this change happen? Do Ishmael and his companions have any choice in making it?

At the village of Yele, a change in this memoir begins when Ishmael goes from being an observer and victim of savage, war-triggered violence to being both of these things as well as a perpetrator of such violence.

In context, Ishmael cannot be blamed for the choice he has to make. It's do as your told or die. I cannot condemn his actions because I have never been in his circumstances. This question calls for your opinion.
