Ishmael reflects on the memories of his family, particularly memories of his family prior to his parent's divorce. He does not, however, reflect upon childhood memories after his induction as a boy soldier. Once he becomes a soldier, his only focus is survival.... he alludes to the fact that he has no emotions or connection to anything during that period of time.
