In Chapter 6, how and why do Ishmael and his companions start farming in the village of Kamator? Why is farming so difficult for Ishmael?

The villagers require the boys to pitch in and help with the farming to pay for their room and board. Ishamel finds that he is far less conditioned than the villagers and cannot physically keep up with the way they work.
