Why does Salva keep repeating the words, “where is my family” throughout Chapter 2?

Salva lost his family..... he had no one. His consistent wondering about their location infers that he refuses to believe they've been taken or killed. Looking for his family gives him hope, and yet, makes him feel hopeless.
