Why cant salva walk with the grandma when she is going to a nearby village?

Salva is all alone when he finds an old lady. He helps her and then she says "it will be better if I journey alone'

I think it would be more dangerous for both her and Salva if he goes with her. There is a Civil War going on. And boys are both feared and in demand to be child soldiers.
